Exhibition Information

Since 2013, I have been photographing various groups of Italy’s native cowboys known as the Butteri. The Butteri are the cattle breeders and horsemen of Maremma, a rugged coastal region spanning from southern Tuscany to northern Lazio and along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Their origins are believed to date back to Etruscan times. They also have a deep connection to Buffalo Bill and the American West, as well as a strong emphasis on sustainable husbandry, but their culture is now threatened.

Italy’s Legendary Cowboys of the Maremma, Photographs by Gabrielle Saveri, is a photographic exploration about the authentic working Butteri, and their devoted followers.

The exhibition will be running from November 15, 2024 - April 15, 2025 at the American Heritage Center in Laramie, WY.
